A Special Tribute to Mr Eddie Trayner (Past Vice President)
The club instructed
Rab & Eddie
tae tour Largs - and
we were ready
tae check oot pubs
& have a spree,
we set aboot oor task
wi' glee.
First port o' call, "Macaulay's"
Pub,
a whisky shop -
there's no' much grub.
A narrow bar, Belhaven
Beer,
It didnae have much
atmosphere....
The second pub was
called "McCabes"
We liked it there,
quite warm and cheery.
It's right next to the
railway station
and warrants mair
investigation
"The George"
came next - it's like a barn,
a fitba' shop - and no
much else,
Ah widnae take a dug
in there,
Aboot it, Ah will say
nae mair.
The fourth one up was
"Charlie Smith's"
The barmaids wide, the
bar's too narrae,
it's no' a place ye'd
want tae tarry.
The fifth pub...."Ye
Olde Anchor Inn"
Largs' oldest pub, we
swanned right in,
Low ceilings,
busy....quite the scene....
The barmaid wisnae
very keen
The sixth pub, "Toby's"....Chalk
and Cheese!
The Manager - sae keen
tae please
There's food - and
space - a welcome air
We should consider
going there.
The seventh, "Papa
Joe's" by name,
A curious, wee,
sea-front howff,
There's stairs tae
climb, it's ower wee,
but worth a
visit...just tae see!
The eighth pub was
called "J G Sharps"
(Ed sworeto angels
playing harps)
Wi' couthy barmaids
spoutin Rabbie,
Guid beer, Guid
food...it wisnae shabby.
A Burns club link-up
was on offer,
A chance tae swell oor
meagre coffer
(one drawback - it's
no' on the front,
tae quibble, ye wid be
a...right spoilsport)
The ninth pub's name?
Oh aye! "Royal Oak"
The barman made poor
Eddie choke
by overchargin' for
the beer!
Forbye, he seemed a
wee bit queer!
(But nivver mind which
way he'd bend it,
the pub......it isnae
recommendit')
The tenth pub?
You recall "McCabe's"?
(the one next to the
railway station)
It had a
chanter......plenty banter..
On Thursday
night!.......A revelation!
The Manager's a real
go-getter,
He's Irish....Loupin'...like
the Setter
He likes his pub tae
buzz and fizz
It's plain he really
knows the biz.
He's keen...There's
food.."The Craic" is good!
(He even offered us a
lock-in
but Ed declined. Ah
found that shockin'!)
But efter Ten-Plus
Pints, plain silly
tae feel the need tae
gild the lily;
Fair fu', we finished
up oor spree
The favoured list
reduced to three:
That's J G Sharp's,
McCabe's and Toby's',
Each one is
good...........ALL recommended
and now oor pub report
is ended.....
.....Except to say we
both suggest
another visit would be
best
to put them to a final
test....
By Treasurer,
Secret'ry and Chairman.....
